Weekend Roundup 5/10-5/11

Colorado Rapids - My game wrapup is here. The West continues to roll over for the East, while FSL defeated Dallas. This leaves the rapids in first place in the West, tied with Dallas, though they are only 7th overall in MLS. We still have the 4th best offense and 5th best defense in the league.

Queen of the South - Off until Scottish Cup final May 24th.

Blackburn Rovers - Just when it looked like Blackburn's European hopes were back everything came crashing down. Facing a Birmingham City team that needed a win at home and help from other results to escape relegation Blackburn rolled over and gave away its European chances. The game was close for most of it, with Birmingham scoring in the first half and Rovers equalizing right after the break. Everything fell apart in the last twenty minutes though as Birmingham struck 3 times. The result wasn't enough for either side as Birmingham was still relegated and Blackburn missed Europe.

Aston Villa did draw their match, so a win would have been enough to claim the Intertoto Cup slot. Instead Blackburn finished the season 7th, 29 points behind the champs, 7 points from the UEFA Cup spot, and 2 points from the Intertoto Cup spot.

Tenerife - CDT hosted the Sporting, who are pushing for promotion. Tenerife had the run of play with Gijon only getting two chances. Unfortunately they made them count, while the home side couldn't find the back of the net, and Tenerife fell 2-0.

With the loss they are officially out of the promotion race, and they are actually closer to the relegation zone. With 5 games to play they are in 9th place, but only 6 points from the first relegation spot.

Ebbsfleet United - Ebbsfleet had their day at Wembley in the FA Trophy final, facing Torquay United who had been bounced out of the promotion playoffs earlier in the week. Both teams went on the attack from the opening whistle and had numerous chances, but none that found their way into the goal. Torquay was called for a penalty kick and former Torquay striker and fan whipping boy Chris McPhee stepped up to take it. The penalty was saved much to the delight of the Torquay fans. Their celebration did not last long though as just on the verge of halftime Ebbsfleet broke down the right side, crossed the ball in, and McPhee got on the end of it to give the Fleet a 1-0 going into the locker rooms.

The second half saw more end to end action, with Ebbsfleet having the grater of the play. Torquay threatened on a number of occasions though, and only a headed ball that went right to keeper Lance Cronin kept them off the scoresheet. They finally ran out of time though, and Ebbsfleet lifted the FA Trophy for the first time in their history. With the victory Ebbsfleet ends its season on a high note.
